Layering
Here are my top few tips for layering this Fall and Winter.
1. Have thinner items for layering! Depending on where you live, it might not get that cold. So while the layering look is really fun, you want it to also be functional for you.
If you saw my Maybe Monday’s this past week, you’ll notice some things I pointed out in regards to layering a hoodie under your jacket. I have a couple hoodies that I use for layering as well as wearing them by themselves.
2. With tops and sweaters, I look specifically at collars/necklines, sleeve lengths, and shirt lengths to decide if it makes for a good layering piece. When the top layering has a wide neckline and the underneath piece has a tight neckline, it doesn’t always look right. Also when the underneath layering is really cropped, but the top layer isn’t, sometimes you’ll see the line show through and that doesn’t look right either. It’s usually best when they line up.
Ideally all your layering items are also items you wear on their own. Because we don’t need to have a closet full of single use items.
3. With tights and shorts/skirts I make sure the colors/textures look good together. Sometimes the colors look right, but a canvas skirt over sweater tights can just read mixed-seasons and it won’t look as good as a satin skirt over sweater tights, or sheer tights with the canvas skirt.
4. Try it on! Sometimes the only way to know if things will lay correctly is to try it on. I do it all the time! Even with items I know and wear all the time.
