Do you REALLY need that?
Holiday shopping is upon us and the “sales” and “deals” are about to be everywhere!
Here are a few things, I do with my clients, to help prevent unnecessary shopping/spending:
1. I highly recommend a shopping list. Yes, for yourself. Knowing what you need/don’t need is really important when you go shopping. Think about going grocery shopping for a holiday meal, hungry, with no list.
√ Yea, that’s how bad it can be. You always come home with extra cookies, chips and definitely missing ingredients for your meals.
√ Think of it this way. We all have habits, when you’re trying to break the bad ones, you have guidelines or other practices in place to help you make new or better choices.
√ So if you’ve always gone shopping and bought only what’s on sale, simply because it’s a “great deal”. Or you always gravitate towards T-shirts when you’re trying to dress more professionally. A shopping list will help keep you on track.
That was a lot, but on to the next one....
2. Check out the item, try it on, without looking at the price tag. Make sure it feels good and it’s an item on the list, then check the tag. We are all human and a good deal can always sway us into thinking we “need” something when we don’t.
3. Remember it’s the holidays and people are going to want to buy YOU gifts. So don’t buy too much and see what you get as a gift. You may want to exchange things you get or people may get you gift cards. So be patient.
4. Also, there will always be more clothes. The malls will still have new clothes come January, so just pace yourself. Unless you’re thrifting. In which case, I would lean towards, “buy it before it’s gone and you have regrets” haha.
5. I would also say, they still have really good sales even after the holidays!
Happy Shopping!
