How to choose the right basics and essentials
Building on my newsletter regarding capsule wardrobes…
Here’s a little checklist of questions to ask yourself.
√ Does it meet all your style words?
You may not have style words picked out. But just think about the looks you always love on yourself, or looks that you aspire to have in your wardrobe and ask yourself if this new piece fits in with all that. You want things in your wardrobe to go together. So if you’re wanting to bring in new pieces that don’t entirely fit the rest of your wardrobe, be selective about those items until you can really blend them in.
√ Can it be worn for multiple seasons?
This is a key attribute for items in my wardrobe. Can I wear this item all year long? I will say, living in LA I get to do this with most of my wardrobe. I know that’s not as easy in other parts of the world. But it’s still a helpful criteria to have on the checklist when shopping.
√ Can it be used for multiple occasions?
This is a lot easier regardless of where you’re living. Having items that you can dress up or down and making them work for many occasions, will help you get a lot of use out of the pieces you have.
√ Can it be worn multiple ways?
Not all things will be able to match this criteria, but I like to think about pieces such as button up shirts or cardigans. These can be worn layered on top of something else or buttoned up and worn on their own. Some skirts can also be worn as strapless dresses. Or some dresses can be layered with tops to look like skirts. Or layered with a skirt it can look like a top.
I hope this list helps you shop with a little more guidance. If you have any questions, feel free to send them my way.
Best,
Tami Sofia
