Los Angeles, The City of Angels

It’s been just over a week since these fires have swept through LA. My home. My inspiration. The place that has been my playground, my school, my heart, since I was 2.5 years old.

Things started to really sink in around Sunday and I felt this huge wave of grief. For all of us. Things will quite literally never be the same for us here.

There’s beauty and sadness in that. They way there is in all change. All endings.

But there are a few big takeaways I want to share.

  • We have SO much stuff! The amount of donations that have poured into every single disaster relief center (which is also so beautiful) has been so eye opening. We all have that much stuff that we can spare, at the drop of a hat. Something to evaluate here. At least that’s how I see it.

  • The speed at which Angelenos have stepped in to help each other has been nothing short of miraculous and extremely heartwarming.

  • The way we have all shown up for each other, checking in on friends, their families, their homes, their pets, while also trying to maintain our lives, jobs, families. We are exhausted, but we won’t stop.

  • People opening their doors to each other and strangers. Because we know the priceless feeling of going “home”.

  • The level of compassion I am seeing is something that will make all of humanity have hope for better times.

  • Every. Single LA resident knows at least one family that has lost their home. Each and every one of us. This event has single-handedly made us all have, now, 2 things in common.

From the angle of what I do, I hope that people think twice about their purchases moving forward. We have so much stuff. In the grand scheme of things, we don’t need most of it.

We want to feel good. We want to feel comfortable. We want to feel beautiful. I support all that. And there’s ways to do that without being bogged down with so many things.

As we rebuild this town, I wanna help keep that front of mind. And I’m here to be of service with ways to do that. Please reach out. That goes for anyone, anywhere.

To anyone receiving this newsletter, outside of LA that wants to help, I’m posting the most up-to-date ways to do so, on my Instagram stories, IG @tami_sofia. Please follow along there.

I’d list resources here, but things are ever changing and I don’t want to mislead anyone to the wrong centers/organizations.

The 2 places I can vouch for, I’ll list here.

Crowned Boxing - IG @crownedboxing

I’m posting their venmo link. This is the best place to send monetary donations as I am personally involved in using that money to buy healthy food and snacks for first responders.

I have been in touch with some of the LAFD and have asked for what they need and that is what we are providing. The rest of the money will be used to buy toiletries and other essentials that people are in need of at the evacuation centers.

Crowned Boxing
413 S Central Ave
Unit E
Glendale, CA 91204

Suay Sew Shop - IG @suaysewshop

This is where to send any clothing, towels, blankets. I say them over other places because this is what they do, regularly, as a business. They never let old clothes go to waste. They repurpose old items and make them new. Clothing scraps, old bed sheets, it doesn’t matter. They will use it and make it new for someone in need.

Suay Sew Shop
905 Mateo St
Los Angeles, CA 90021

They have extended hours right now, please DM them to confirm. But in general M-W 10-5pm, TH-SUN 10-6pm.

Info@suayla.com for any inquiries or to acquire donation bags. The donation bag is $20 = and holds 20 pounds. You can order these from anywhere in the states and send over any clothing items.

To my LA people: Rest up. This is going to be a long game. But we are here and we can do this. We’ll come back different. We’ll come back stronger, more united, and dare I say, even better.

With all my love,

Tami Sofia
