Skirts

By Body Shape

I did a poll in my instagram stories and got a good response regarding skirts. I’m going to break this into 2 newsletters. This week I’ll talk about skirts best suited for certain body styles. And next week we’ll talk about styling them.

In general, I don’t really like to use the geometric shapes or fruits as a standard for telling people what to wear. Especially when we’re figuring out your overall style. There’s way too much nuance.

But when it comes to just one item/one portion of the body, such as skirts, I think it’s helpful.

So we’ll just use these few categories:

Inverted Triangle

  • This body shape is heavier/fuller on the top half of the body, so fuller skirts are best. Circle skirts, skater skirts, things with volume.

  • You get to have a lot of fun with skirts. And because your body is a little “off balance” in weight, skirts and a top are preferable for fit, over a dress, where it’s one size top and bottom.

  • The length of the skirt would depend on your height and your legs. I would say a shorter person would opt for a mini skirt to maximize the legs. A taller person would opt for a maxi.

Circle

  • This body type tends to be heavy in the midsection, something many women struggle with. To hide that midsection you actually want to wear something that creates a waistline for you.

  • Again, here is where skirts vs dresses are better for your body type.

  • I would wear an A-line skirt, something that defines the waist, but doesn’t cling to the body.

  • Also an A-line silhouette with small, front pleats is very flattering. Small front pleats on your trousers will also be helpful.

  • For the length, I would say you could do a midi length if you don’t feel like your legs are getting cut off. Skirt length is so subjective to height, leg length, and leg size. Some people have heavier legs, some have slim legs.

Hourglass (not exactly a geometric shape, but roll with it 😂)

  • You are blessed to be balanced and can get away with many silhouettes.

  • You can wear form fitting skirts and long as they come in and hug your waistline.

  • The length again would depend on your height and legs. I would lean toward maxi’s or minis and avoid the midi length.

Triangle

  • This body type carries its weight on the bottom half. So I would say you want to add volume up top and keep the bottom half more subtle. Again, there’s always some nuance here.

  • I would opt for A-line skirts. I would also say midi’s and maxi’s are best here. To elongate the bottom half of the body.

  • Obviously if you’re very petite or under 5’1” a mini skirt could definitely work. In which case an A-line is tough, because they tend to tent out in the back. So I’d go for a subtle circle skirt, with minimal volume but give your hips and butt some room to live.

Rectangle

  • This body type tends to be straight and lacks a lot of shape. So you also get to have fun and play with volume.

  • I would recommend circle skirts and skater skirts.

  • This will be similar to the inverted triangle body shape. Because if we’re just looking at the bottom half of the body, they’re more similar.

  • However you could be a heavier set rectangle frame, in which case you’d want to add minimal volume to the bottom to add some shape, without making you look heavier.

Hope these help! If you have any specific questions please reach out. Send me a DM or an email and I can always address it in another newsletter. Your questions fuel me with ideas of topics and things to share. I truly value them.

Stay tuned next week for skirt styling!

Best,
